Head coach Gautam Gambhir has urged fans and critics to allow time for Shubman Gill, the newly appointed Test captain of India, following a challenging start to his leadership journey. Gill's captaincy debut ended in disappointment with a five-wicket loss to England in the opening match of the series at Headingley.
Gill faced the tough realities of Test cricket as his captaincy commenced with a defeat, despite India showing dominance for significant portions of the game.
At one point during the fourth day, India appeared poised to secure their first victory at Headingley since 2002. However, a late collapse and a strong performance from England's tailenders resulted in a disappointing outcome for Gill and his team.
Gambhir Supports Gill's Leadership Potential
Despite the rocky start without seasoned players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Gambhir praised Gill's leadership, describing it as "phenomenal" and reminding critics of his potential to succeed as captain.
"It's his first Test match, and naturally, there are nerves involved. Captaining the Test side is a significant honor, and he performed exceptionally well. The way he batted in the first innings, despite his nerves, was impressive, especially with a century to his name," Gambhir stated during the post-match press conference.
"We need to give him time to grow into the role. It's early days, and he will improve. Leading in such challenging conditions is akin to being thrown into the deep end, but I believe he will emerge as a competent professional."
Gill Achieves Century in Captaincy Debut
While some questioned Gill's on-field leadership, his batting performance in the first innings silenced many critics.
He effectively challenged England's inexperienced pace attack, forming a formidable partnership with Rishabh Pant, which resulted in a 195-run stand. Gill's innings concluded at 147 runs off 227 balls after attempting to hit a boundary but was caught by Josh Tongue.
This marked Gill's first century as Test captain, showcasing his batting prowess.
Gill's First Defeat as Test Captain
In his second innings, Gill was dismissed cheaply for 8 runs after inadvertently hitting the ball onto his stumps. However, India found hope in KL Rahul and Pant, who both scored centuries, leading the team to a total of 364 runs.
Chasing a target of 371 runs, England's Ben Duckett scored a remarkable 149, and Joe Root contributed an unbeaten 53, guiding England to victory and marking their second-highest successful chase in Test history.
